Can You Dive with Whales in the Canary Islands?

Can You Dive with Whales in the Canary Islands?
This is one of the questions we receive most often at our dive center in Tenerife. In fact, we answer it several times every week. That is why I have decided to address it clearly and definitively in our blog.

The Canary Islands are one of the best places in Europe to observe cetaceans in the wild. However, watching whales and diving with them are not the same thing, and the difference is very important – both from a legal and an ethical point of view.

Cetaceans in the Canary Islands: A Unique Natural Paradise

The Canary Islands are home to one of the highest concentrations of cetaceans in the world. More than 20 species of whales and dolphins can be observed throughout the year, making the archipelago a true marine sanctuary.

In Tenerife, for example, it is common to see resident short-finned pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins, and – at certain times of the year – migratory whales. This natural richness is precisely why very strict regulations exist to protect them.

Can You Dive with Whales in Spain?

The answer is clear: no.

In Spain, and therefore also in the Canary Islands, it is prohibited to dive or swim with whales and other cetaceans. The legislation protects these animals from any activity that could cause them stress, alter their natural behavior, or put them at risk.

Only very special permits are granted for scientific purposes, always under controlled conditions. As a responsible dive center, we fully support these regulations. We have witnessed in other destinations, such as Egypt, unethical practices that show why this protection is necessary.

How to Watch Whales in Tenerife Responsibly

Although diving with whales in the Canary Islands is not allowed, it is possible to see them in the wild in a safe, legal, and respectful way.

The best option is whale-watching tours conducted by authorized operators, using certified vessels and clear conservation protocols.

We work with our partner, Whale Wise Eco Tours, a company committed to eco-friendly tourism and environmental education. These trips allow you to observe whales and dolphins in their natural habitat without interfering with their behavior.

Where Can You Dive with Whales?

If your dream is to dive with whales, there are a few destinations where this activity is allowed under strict regulations:

  • Mexico, mainly with whale sharks
  • Maldives, during certain seasons
  • Norway, with orcas and humpback whales

That said, in Norway the experience comes with an extra: the water is so cold that after the dive, you’re never sure if you’re excited or just can’t feel your hands. An unforgettable experience… for more than one reason.

In all of these destinations, it is essential to choose responsible operators and respect local regulations.

Is It Safe to Dive with Whales?

From a behavioral perspective, whales are not aggressive animals. However, their size and strength pose obvious risks if proper distances are not maintained.

But the most important question is not whether it is safe for the diver, but:
Is it safe for the whales?

Stress, disruptions to their migratory routes, and behavioral changes are real risks. That is why many countries, including Spain, have chosen to completely prohibit this type of direct interaction.

As a dive center in Tenerife, we firmly believe that ocean conservation must come before any tourist experience.

We offer quality diving, responsible training, and authentic encounters with marine life, always with respect. If you want to see whales, we help you do it ethically. If you want to dive, we show you spectacular seabeds teeming with biodiversity.
