What is adaptive diving?

Adaptive diving is a scuba diving training program designed to make diving accessible for people with various physical or mental limitations. The goal is to provide everyone with the opportunity to experience the underwater world, regardless of physical or mental barriers. At Scubanana, we are committed to ensuring that a disability will not stand in the way of your desire to explore the underwater world.

Why is adaptive diving important?

The world of diving is not just a new adventure for many, but also a psychological enrichment. Anyone who has ever floated weightlessly through a school of fish or observed a ray hunting can attest to this. However, for a long time, it was only accessible to a select group of people. The development of adaptive diving has made it possible to offer this incredible experience to individuals with limitations as well.

What opportunities do people with disabilities have to discover diving?

Anyone starting with diving must first ask themselves whether there are any medical reasons that would advise against it.

Diving is a sport practiced in a hyperbaric (pressurized) environment, and although diving is very safe today thanks to all the scientific advancements, this does not mean that it is completely risk-free. Therefore, every diver must fill out a medical self-disclosure form at the beginning and, if necessary, seek a doctor’s opinion on whether diving can be performed without restrictions. Feel free to read more about this topic in our blog post.

Once the medical aspects are cleared, there are two options: a Discover Scuba Diving experience or the PADI Open Water Diver course.

In general, regardless of any limitations you may have, please discuss your situation with us before coming to our dive center. We are happy to arrange a meeting or phone call to discuss how we can tailor your dives. We have specially trained and experienced instructors in adaptive diving who will be happy to assist you.

Discover Scuba Diving with a Disability

In the Discover Scuba Diving experience, no diving certification is awarded. It is possible to explore the underwater world in a limited open water setting without having to study for an exam. However, the basic principles of diving must still be understood. That’s why we begin every Discover Scuba Diving session with a theoretical briefing, where we can also discuss any specific needs and individual support.

PADI Open Water Diver Course with disability

We are regularly asked whether it is possible to complete an Open Water Diver course and obtain certification even if one has a disability. The general answer is YES. No one is excluded from diving as long as all performance requirements can be met. Let’s take a closer look at these requirements.

The PADI Open Water Diver course starts with theory, which is typically completed through E-learning before the course begins. This offers the advantage of no time constraints, allowing each participant to learn at their own pace. The E-learning consists of texts, images, and videos for illustration, along with review questions and quizzes. Alternatively, we can discuss the option of working through the theory together at the center, which would naturally extend the duration of the course.

Following the theory, there are several dives with various exercises that must be completed. Each exercise has performance requirements, but there is flexibility in how they are carried out. The equipment can be individually adapted to the diver to ensure that the exercises can be performed comfortably and safely.

To illustrate, let’s take the example of the exercise “Recovering the Regulator.” In this exercise, the regulator is taken out of the mouth and needs to be retrieved from behind the shoulder. Typically, this is done by rotating the body to the right side and making a large circular motion with the right arm. If this is not possible due to a physical limitation, we can either adjust the execution or adapt the equipment. For example, instead of making a large circle, one could reach behind the head to feel the hose of the regulator at the first stage and retrieve it. Another option would be to use a regulator that can be modified so that it is attached to the body on the left side instead of the right, and so on.

What we cannot change are the performance requirements, but we can find many individual ways to help achieve them.

Diving for certified divers with disabilities

Once the challenge of the PADI Open Water Diver course has been overcome and certification is obtained, divers with disabilities can either dive with other certified divers or join guided dives. By this point, the diver with a disability typically has a clear understanding of what support they may need from a guide or buddy. They can communicate this openly to find the right dive center and the most suitable dive for their needs, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.

How can I support my buddy with disability?

The PADI Adaptive Support Diver course has been developed to provide targeted support for diving. This course is designed for certified divers who want to learn how to safely assist a dive buddy with physical or mental disabilities. It teaches divers the skills and techniques necessary to support a buddy with disabilities during dives, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

The course consists of theoretical training, which includes understanding the different abilities of divers with disabilities and developing adaptation techniques. It also involves practical exercises and conducting dives with a buddy who requires support, under the guidance of experienced instructors. Additionally, the course covers safety aspects, including learning safety protocols and emergency management in special situations.

Requirements:

    • Participants must be at least 15 years old
    • PADI Open Water Diver certification (or equivalent)
    • Completed the Emergency First Response (EFR) Primary and Secondary Care course within the last 24 months
    • Recommended: PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Course

This course not only enhances technical knowledge but also promotes empathy and communication skills, which are essential for safely diving with a buddy who requires support. It provides the perfect opportunity to learn how to assist your buddy effectively. Feel free to contact us, and we will send you more information about the course.

How can people with complex disabilities dive?

If, due to PADI guidelines or medical requirements, you are unable to dive, you also have the option to contact the HSA. The Handicapped Scuba Association (HSA) is a global non-profit organization that offers specially developed training programs for divers with varying abilities. Their multilevel certification system takes individual needs and capabilities into account, allowing divers with disabilities to be trained at different levels. Unlike the PADI system, which offers a single certification, the HSA provides various levels of certification tailored to the diver’s needs and abilities.

Conclusion

Adaptive diving opens the fascinating underwater world to everyone – regardless of physical or mental limitations. With customized equipment, trained staff, and a flexible training philosophy, it becomes clear: diving is not a privilege, but an opportunity that offers many people new perspectives, freedom, and confidence. Whether it’s a trial dive or a certified course – with the right preparation and support, almost anything is possible. The key is open communication, medical clearance, and an experienced team that addresses individual needs.
